Description

Pack: 10 seeds

Passiflora balbis is one of those extraordinary passionflower species that looks almost unreal: elegant pink tubular inflorescences, delicate star-like flowers, and beautifully speckled fruits with a highly ornamental appearance.

This species belongs to the family Passifloraceae and is part of the remarkable Astrophea group — a fascinating lineage of passionflowers that includes lianas, shrubs, and tree-like forms from tropical South America. Unlike the more common passionfruit vines, many Astrophea species are rarely seen in cultivation and are highly sought after by serious collectors.

This seed lot comes from the Roraima region, in northern Brazil, near the famous Monte Roraima area. According to the collector, the fruit has a sweet flavor and is eaten fresh in nature. The species is not commonly found in private collections, which makes this a very special opportunity for growers interested in rare edible and ornamental Passiflora.

The flowers are exceptionally beautiful, with soft pink tones, pale petals, and a dark ornamental corona. The fruits are small to medium-sized, ovoid to ellipsoid, with a greenish-brown surface covered in pale speckles and darker longitudinal ribs.

Growing notes

Sow fresh seeds in a warm, humid environment using a well-draining substrate. A mix with peat/coco fiber, perlite, and fine bark or sand should work well. Keep the medium lightly moist but never waterlogged.

Recommended germination temperature: 24–30°C / 75–86°F.

As with many rare wild Passiflora species, germination can be irregular and may take several weeks or longer. Freshness, warmth, humidity, and patience are important.

Once germinated, grow in bright filtered light, avoiding harsh sun when plants are young. In tropical or subtropical climates, it should be grown with warmth, humidity, and support for climbing growth.

Collector’s note

This is a rare wild species offered in very limited quantity. Best suited for experienced growers, Passiflora collectors, botanical collections, and anyone interested in unusual edible ornamental vines from the Amazon region.
