Passiflora speciosa Gardner is an extraordinary Brazilian passionflower prized for its exceptionally large and intensely colored scarlet-red flowers. It is considered one of the most spectacular ornamental species in the genus and remains very rarely offered as fresh seed.
The brilliant flowers display long, elegant floral segments surrounding the central corona and reproductive structures. Their vivid red coloration and abundant nectar are adaptations for pollination by hummingbirds, which visit the flowers in their natural habitat.
A remarkable Brazilian botanical species
This is a true botanical species rather than a commercial hybrid. Passiflora speciosa is native to Brazil and is associated primarily with warm, humid tropical and subtropical environments.
Its name comes from the Latin speciosus, meaning “splendid,” “magnificent” or “beautiful”—an especially appropriate name for this outstanding passionflower.

Cultivation
Grow in a warm location with bright light, good humidity and protection from cold winds. A fertile but well-draining growing medium is recommended. Established vines appreciate regular moisture during active growth, but the roots should never remain permanently waterlogged.
In cooler climates, the plant is best maintained in a greenhouse, conservatory or large container that can be protected during winter. It should be treated as a tropical or warm-subtropical species and protected from frost.
Germination recommendations
For best results, sow the seeds while they are still fresh. Soaking them in lukewarm water for approximately 24–48 hours before planting may help soften the seed coat. Sow about 0.5–1 cm deep in a clean, airy and well-draining medium.
Maintain warm temperatures, ideally around 24–30°C (75–86°F), together with constant light moisture and good ventilation. Germination time in wild Passiflora species can be irregular, so patience is sometimes required.
