Description
Eugenia sp. “Bola Dourada” – Giant Golden Fruit from the Brazilian Highlands
SEPTEMBER 2026 PRE-SALE – EXCEPTIONAL SPROUTING SEEDS!
Eugenia sp. “Bola Dourada” is one of the most extraordinary large-fruited Eugenias we have encountered among rare Brazilian fruit collections.
This remarkable and still-unidentified Eugenia comes from the highlands of Minas Gerais, Brazil, reportedly growing at approximately 1,300 meters (4,265 feet) above sea level.
Its unusual combination of characteristics makes it particularly fascinating: a relatively compact tree producing spectacular golden fruits, exceptionally sweet creamy pulp, and large seeds.
And now we have some very exciting news about the seeds themselves!
Extraordinary Seed Condition – Approximately 70% Already Rooted!
AMAZING GERMINATION DEVELOPMENT!
We have carefully inspected our current September batch, and approximately 70% of the seeds already show beautiful, well-developed roots!
Some have produced particularly impressive, elongated roots, showing advanced germination development.
Equally encouraging, the remaining seeds, which have not yet visibly sprouted, look absolutely splendid: firm, healthy, and in excellent physical condition.
This is exceptionally exciting material for collectors interested in growing unusual tropical and subtropical Eugenias.
These are living seeds, many of which have already begun their germination process!
Because the seeds are actively developing, they must be handled carefully and planted promptly after arrival. Root development at the time of inspection does not guarantee survival after transportation.
Spectacular Golden Fruits with Exceptionally Sweet Pulp
According to field observations, the fruits may reach approximately 5–7 cm (2–2.75 inches) in diameter.
They develop a striking golden-yellow to orange-golden exterior, surrounding pale, juicy, creamy pulp and large seeds.
The flavor has been described as extraordinarily sweet, rich, and satisfying.
One particularly memorable description compares the flavor to sweetened milk — milk with sugar!
Such an unusual flavor description, combined with the remarkable fruit size, makes this accession especially attractive to serious fruit collectors.
A Rare Highland Eugenia from Minas Gerais
Unlike many tropical lowland Eugenias, this accession reportedly grows in a relatively cool highland environment with partial shade and filtered sunlight.
The tree is described as reaching approximately 3–4 meters (10–13 feet) in height.
This combination of modest tree size and exceptionally large fruit makes Bola Dourada particularly interesting for collectors with limited growing space and for experimental subtropical orchards.
Why Bola Dourada Is So Special
- Exceptionally rare Brazilian Eugenia with an unresolved botanical identity.
- Reportedly giant fruits, approximately 5–7 cm in diameter.
- Beautiful golden-yellow to orange-golden skin.
- Rich, creamy and remarkably sweet pulp, described as reminiscent of milk with sugar.
- Compact tree, reportedly around 3–4 meters tall.
- Highland origin at approximately 1,300 meters elevation.
- Approximately 70% of the current seeds already rooted!
- Remaining seeds in splendid physical condition.
- Especially interesting for collectors of rare Myrtaceae and unusual edible fruit trees.
Important Botanical Identification
This material is currently offered as Eugenia sp. “Bola Dourada”.
Its precise botanical species identity remains unresolved, so we prefer to retain the original collector designation rather than assign an unsupported scientific name.
Important: This is the highland Minas Gerais accession known as “Bola Dourada”. It should not be confused with the separate Bahia accession known as “Bola de Ouro”.
These represent distinct collection materials from different geographical origins.
Fruit size, flavor, tree height and habitat descriptions are based on field observations. Further botanical documentation will be necessary to clarify its identity.
Cold Tolerance and Growing Potential
The reported highland origin of this Eugenia makes it particularly interesting for experimental cultivation in subtropical environments.
Growing naturally at approximately 1,300 meters elevation may indicate some adaptation to cooler conditions compared with strictly tropical lowland species.
However, cold tolerance has not yet been formally established, and no precise frost-hardiness rating can be guaranteed.
Young plants should be protected from frost and prolonged cold, especially during their first years.
For growers in mild subtropical climates, Bola Dourada represents an especially intriguing species to evaluate under carefully protected conditions.
Germination and Seed Care
IMPORTANT: MANY SEEDS ARE ALREADY ACTIVELY ROOTING!
With approximately 70% showing visible root development, careful handling is particularly important.
- Plant immediately upon arrival.
- Use a loose, airy and moisture-retentive substrate.
- Suitable mixtures may include coconut coir, peat, perlite, fine bark or vermiculite.
- Maintain evenly moist conditions without waterlogging.
- For already-rooted seeds, gently position the emerging root downward.
- Never bend, force or break the developing roots.
- Cover the seeds only lightly with substrate.
- Maintain temperatures around 24–28°C (75–82°F) as a provisional germination guideline.
- Provide bright filtered light and protection from intense direct sun.
- Protect developing seedlings from frost and temperature extremes.
We recommend treating this accession as having moisture-sensitive seeds. Avoid allowing them to dry out during germination.
Important: Although the present batch shows excellent visible development, subsequent germination, seedling establishment and survival depend on shipping conditions and cultivation practices.
