Eugenia sp. “Bola Dourada” is one of the most impressive large-fruited Eugenias we have encountered among recent wild Brazilian collections.

This unidentified Eugenia is a native highland material from Minas Gerais, Brazil, reportedly growing at approximately 1,300 meters above sea level.

The plant occurs in a relatively cool environment with partial shade and filtered light. This makes it especially interesting for collectors searching for rare Eugenias from elevated, subtropical Brazilian habitats rather than strictly tropical lowland conditions.

The tree is described as relatively compact, reaching approximately 3–4 meters in height. This combination is particularly attractive: a small Eugenia tree producing exceptionally large golden fruits.

According to the collector, the fruits may reach approximately 5–7 cm. They develop a striking golden-yellow to orange-golden skin, with pale, juicy and creamy pulp surrounding large seeds.

The flavor is described as exceptionally sweet, rich and satisfying, reminiscent of sweetened milk or milk with sugar.

Because its botanical identity remains uncertain, this material is being offered honestly as Eugenia sp. “Bola Dourada”: an exceptional native Minas Gerais accession for serious rare-fruit and Myrtaceae collectors.

ACCESSION NOTE:

This is the highland Minas Gerais material known as “Bola Dourada”.

It should not be confused with the different native Bahia accession currently referred to as “Bola de Ouro”. Although the fruits may appear generally similar, Clayton confirmed that they represent distinct collection materials from different regions.

IMPORTANT BOTANICAL NOTE:

This is an unidentified Eugenia species or wild accession and is not being offered under a confirmed botanical species name.

The information concerning fruit size, flavor, tree size, elevation and habitat comes from the collector’s field observations. Further botanical study will be necessary as cultivated plants mature, flower and fruit.

The name “Bola Dourada” should therefore be understood as a collection or commercial name used to distinguish this particular native Minas Gerais material.

COLD TOLERANCE:

Cold tolerance has not yet been formally tested.

Its reported origin at approximately 1,300 meters elevation suggests that it may be more adaptable to cool subtropical conditions than many lowland tropical Eugenias. However, this remains an informed possibility rather than a confirmed hardiness rating.

Young plants should be protected from frost, particularly during their first years. Keep seedlings sheltered from temperatures below approximately 30–32°F / -1 to 0°C.

Established plants may eventually tolerate brief light frosts, but no precise minimum temperature can currently be guaranteed. The highland origin nevertheless makes this an especially promising experimental Eugenia for subtropical growers and mild-frost climates.

AVAILABILITY / SHIPPING NOTE:

This material belongs to our July 2026 Brazilian seed batch, which has already arrived at our partner in the United States.

The seeds have been inspected, classified and conditioned for redistribution. Remaining seeds will be shipped from the USA, subject to their final condition and availability.

Because these are rare, fresh Myrtaceae seeds, some may begin germinating during storage or transit. This is generally a positive indication of viability, but sprouting seeds must be handled and planted very carefully.

Freshness is essential. Seeds are packed with controlled moisture to preserve viability, but germination cannot be guaranteed because of natural biological variation, handling conditions and international transit.

GERMINATION SUGGESTION:

Sow immediately after receiving the seeds.

Use a light, airy and well-draining substrate that still retains some moisture. Suitable mixtures may include peat or coconut coir combined with perlite, fine pine bark or vermiculite.

Keep the seeds warm and evenly humid, ideally around 24–28°C / 75–82°F.

Do not allow them to dry completely, but avoid saturated, muddy or waterlogged conditions.

If a seed has already produced a root, position the root carefully downward and avoid bending or breaking it. Cover only lightly.

Young seedlings should initially be maintained under bright shade or filtered light and protected from intense direct sun.
