Description

Eugenia sp. “Bola de Ouro” is one of the most impressive Eugenia-type fruits we have seen recently from wild Brazilian material.

This is an unidentified Eugenia species from highland Brazil, reportedly found near the Minas Gerais / southern Bahia region, at approximately 1300 meters above sea level. The plant grows in a semi-cool environment with partial shade and filtered light — a very interesting detail for collectors interested in rare Eugenias from higher-altitude subtropical conditions.

The tree is described as small, around 3–4 meters tall, which makes this material especially attractive: a compact Eugenia producing very large golden fruits.

According to the collector, some fruits reach 6–7 cm, with a striking golden-yellow skin and pale juicy pulp. The flavor is described as extremely sweet, rich and satisfying, reminiscent of milk with sugar. The opened fruit photos show large seeds surrounded by pale creamy pulp and juice.

Because the botanical identity is still uncertain, this material is offered honestly as Eugenia sp. “Bola de Ouro” — an exceptional golden Eugenia selection for serious rare fruit collectors.

Cold tolerance

Cold tolerance is still untested, but this Eugenia comes from a reported highland environment around 1300 m elevation, in a semi-cool, partially shaded area near the Minas Gerais / southern Bahia region. Based on its origin and comparison with other hardy Brazilian Myrtaceae such as Uvaia and Surinam Cherry, young plants should be protected from frost, especially below 30–32°F / -1 to 0°C. However, well-established plants may have potential to tolerate light to moderate frosts around 25–28°F / -2 to -4°C. This is an estimate, not a confirmed hardiness rating, but the highland origin makes it a very promising candidate for subtropical growers and mild-frost climates.

SHIPPING / PRE-SALE NOTE:

This is a July Pre-Sale item. Seeds are expected to be shipped to the USA first and then distributed from there. Estimated availability for USA shipping: July, depending on seed arrival, inspection and condition.

As with all rare Myrtaceae seeds, freshness is very important. Seeds will be handled with moisture control to preserve viability, but germination cannot be guaranteed due to the natural variability of rare tropical/subtropical seeds and international transit conditions.

GERMINATION SUGGESTION:

Sow fresh as soon as possible. Use a well-draining but moisture-retentive substrate, such as peat/coir with perlite or fine bark. Keep warm, humid and shaded, ideally around 24–28°C. Do not allow the seeds to dry out completely, but avoid waterlogging. Young seedlings should be protected from strong direct sun.

Suggested conditions:

  • Temperature: 24–28°C
  • Light: bright shade / filtered light
  • Moisture: evenly moist, never waterlogged
  • Substrate: airy, slightly acidic, well-draining
  • Germination: treat as a rare fresh Eugenia seed
