Description

Plinia sp. “Cabacinha” — Black Navel-Group Jaboticaba from Southern Bahia

Some rare jaboticabas stand out before anyone has even tasted them. This southern Bahia accession is one: ripe fruits turn deep burgundy to almost black, while several display a distinctive little elongated neck — the reason for the collector name “Cabacinha” (little gourd). The authentic source photographs document its appearance rather than relying on generic jaboticaba images.

What we know about this accession

  • Ripe fruit: dark burgundy to almost black, according to collector and photos.
  • Shape: variable, including rounded and little-gourd / necked forms.
  • Locality: southern Bahia, Brazil (collector report).
  • Rarity note: the collector describes a local population of three individual plants; this is not an independently verified census.
  • Taste: no dependable flavor assessment has yet been provided.
  • Botanical identification: Plinia sp.; “Navel group” is an informal collector grouping, not a formal scientific rank.

Why collectors may be interested

The value here is the unusual original material, its documented dark fruit and the opportunity to grow an accession not yet confidently matched to a described species. We will update this page if reliable additional field observations become available.
