Campomanesia sp. “Toriba” — Rare Dark-Red Brazilian Guabiroba

Meet a remarkable wild-collected Campomanesia accession from the Atlantic Forest region of southern Bahia, Brazil. Its ripe fruits range from red to deep wine-purple, sometimes nearly black. Cut fruits reveal bright golden-yellow flesh that is described by the field collector as exceptionally juicy and sweet.

What makes “Toriba” special?

  • Striking fruits: rich red to dark purple skin contrasting with golden-yellow pulp.
  • Excellent reported flavor: sweet and very succulent, according to the original collector.
  • Wild Brazilian origin: reported from the Atlantic Forest around the Ilhéus–Itacaré region of Bahia.
  • Unusual collector material: a small, limited collection with original photographs of the plant, ripe fruits, cut fruit and seeds.

Botanical identification

“Toriba” is a provisional field name, not a formally published scientific species name. The plant has been provisionally placed in Campomanesia. It may represent an undescribed taxon, but this has not been established by a formal botanical study. Identification and characteristics of seed-grown plants remain subject to verification.

Fresh seed care

As with many fleshy-fruited Brazilian Myrtaceae, sow the seeds promptly after arrival in a loose, airy substrate kept evenly moist but not waterlogged. Protect young seedlings from harsh sun and cold. Germination time, viability and exact growth requirements for this provisional accession have not been formally established.
