Description
Cambucí – Mid Size Selection
Campomanesia phaea
One of the most extraordinary native fruits of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest — now available as an actively germinating seed lot!
Cambucí (Campomanesia phaea) is a remarkable Brazilian Myrtaceae species, famous for its unmistakable flattened, flying-saucer-shaped fruits, intense aroma, and outstanding culinary potential.
🌱 SPECIAL UPDATE – OCTOBER 2026
THE CURRENT SEED BATCH IS ALREADY GERMINATING!
Our latest inspection revealed extensive germination activity in this Cambucí Mid Size seed lot.
Numerous seeds have already developed visible, elongated pinkish roots!
For collectors and growers, this is a particularly interesting opportunity: instead of starting exclusively with ungerminated seeds, you can obtain material that has already begun the germination process.
The photograph below shows the actual germinating seed lot.
These are not ordinary dormant seeds — germination is already underway!
Actual Cambucí Mid Size seed batch – October 2026.

Important Information About Sprouted Seeds
Because these seeds have already started germinating, they require particularly careful handling.
- Plant promptly after receiving them.
- Avoid bending, pulling, or breaking the emerging roots.
- Keep the roots protected from drying out.
- Use a moist, airy, well-draining substrate.
- Minimize unnecessary handling and transplant disturbance.
Actively germinating seeds are more delicate during transportation than dormant seeds. Their condition and suitability for shipping must be confirmed before dispatch. Visible germination does not guarantee successful establishment.
An Iconic Fruit of the Atlantic Forest
Cambucí is one of the most distinctive and culturally important native fruits of Brazil’s Atlantic Forest.
Its fruits have an extraordinary flattened, rounded shape, often compared to a flying saucer or a small clay pot.
They generally remain green to yellowish-green even when ripe, making their shape and fragrance particularly important indicators of maturity.
The flesh is highly aromatic, juicy, and refreshing, with a characteristic acidic to sweet-acid flavor.
Unlike many tropical fruits primarily enjoyed fresh, Cambucí is especially appreciated for culinary processing.
Its remarkable fragrance and natural acidity make it particularly suitable for:
- Fresh juices and concentrated fruit pulps
- Sorbets and ice creams
- Jams, jellies, and preserves
- Sauces and gourmet preparations
- Traditional and contemporary Brazilian cuisine
In recent years, Cambucí has attracted renewed attention from native fruit enthusiasts, chefs, conservationists, small producers, and collectors of unusual Brazilian fruit species.
About This Mid Size Selection
This listing represents a specific seed lot collected from medium-sized Cambucí fruits.
Our Brazilian source described these fruits as particularly juicy and succulent.
The selection is not primarily promoted for maximum sweetness. Its main characteristics are its juicy fruit profile, medium fruit size, and value as propagation material.
Typical Cambucí fruits are often approximately 4–6 cm wide, although actual dimensions vary with genetics, growing conditions, and origin.
For collectors, growing multiple seedlings from this material may provide opportunities to observe variation in vigor, growth habit, fruit characteristics, and adaptation over time.
Please note: Seed-grown plants may vary from the parent tree. The characteristics of individual future seedlings cannot be guaranteed.
Why Grow Cambucí?
- Extraordinary fruit shape: one of the most recognizable fruits of the Atlantic Forest.
- Highly aromatic: prized for its distinctive fragrance and refreshing acidity.
- Excellent culinary potential: particularly valuable for juices, sorbets, preserves, and gourmet preparations.
- Botanical interest: an unusual member of the Myrtaceae family.
- Conservation value: growing native Atlantic Forest species can contribute to their appreciation and preservation.
- Collector appeal: still relatively uncommon in cultivation outside Brazil.
- Current germination advantage: the present batch already shows extensive root development.

Growing and Planting Instructions
Because this batch is already germinating, prompt planting is especially important.
Use a well-draining, slightly acidic substrate suitable for young Myrtaceae seedlings. Possible components include peat, coco coir, fine bark, perlite, and coarse sand.
Recommended Conditions
- Temperature: Warm conditions, approximately 22–28 °C as a preliminary target.
- Light: Bright shade or filtered sunlight for young seedlings.
- Moisture: Evenly moist, never waterlogged.
- Drainage: Excellent aeration around developing roots.
- Handling: Avoid disturbing or damaging emerging roots.
- Protection: Avoid strong direct sun and excessive drying during early development.
When planting germinated seeds, carefully position the emerging root downward where possible, without forcing or bending it. Cover lightly with substrate appropriate to the seed and root size.
Like many native Myrtaceae, Cambucí benefits from fresh seed handling and stable germination conditions.
Successful establishment depends on seed condition, handling, transportation, substrate, temperature, moisture, and subsequent care.
Two Different Cambucí Selections
We have offered two distinct Cambucí seed lots:
- Smaller-fruit selection: a separate fresh-fruit seed lot.
- Mid Size selection: the juicy, medium-fruit lot described on this page, with documented active germination.
Both belong to Campomanesia phaea, but originate from different fruit batches and should be treated as separate selections.
This listing refers specifically to the Mid Size selection.
🌱 An Unusual Opportunity for Myrtaceae Collectors
Cambucí is already an extraordinary fruit species — but this particular seed batch offers something especially interesting.
With numerous seeds already developing visible pink roots, collectors have an opportunity to begin cultivation with material that has passed the initial germination stage.
For growers interested in rare Brazilian Myrtaceae, this is an excellent occasion to discover one of the Atlantic Forest’s most distinctive native fruits.
