Description
Astrocaryum aff. campestre (C) — Tucum Anão, compact Brazilian Cerrado palm
This remarkable Tucum Anão comes from the Brazilian Cerrado and is offered under the cautious working identification Astrocaryum aff. campestre. The expression aff. (affinis) means that the plant resembles Astrocaryum campestre but has not been definitively identified as that species. We prefer to preserve that uncertainty rather than label an unusual wild palm too confidently.
A compact, spiny palm with basal fruiting
Unlike a tall coconut palm, this plant forms a much more compact tuft of arching, narrow-leaved fronds. The original photographs show rounded green fruits clustered close to the plant’s base, protected by fibrous palm structures carrying conspicuous spines. The fruit cross-section is especially interesting: a green outer surface, pale fibrous or fleshy tissue, a dark hard layer, and a white inner kernel.
Coconut-like kernel flavor — locally reported
One particularly appealing detail in the local account is that the white kernel reportedly has a flavor reminiscent of coconut. This is an observation associated with the source plant, not a laboratory test or a universal guarantee of flavor. The seeds we offer are intended for planting, not for eating. We are not claiming that every plant grown from seed will produce identical fruit.
Why it appeals to collectors
- Uncommon palm: unusual dwarf / compact habit compared with familiar cultivated coconuts.
- Striking appearance: stiff, arched foliage and a distinctive spiny fruiting structure.
- Interesting fruits: near-basal clusters and a white inner kernel within a hard endocarp.
- Brazilian native habitat: collected from Cerrado-type vegetation.
- Botanical intrigue: resembles Astrocaryum campestre but retains an honest provisional identification.
Cultivation pointers
For this warm-climate palm, use a deep container and a freely draining but moisture-retentive medium, and protect the seed from prolonged waterlogging. Warm, stable temperatures are generally preferable for tropical palm germination. These hard-shelled palm seeds may take time to germinate, and no particular percentage or timetable can be guaranteed. The specific germination technique for this collector accession has not yet been established.
Seed pre-sale and dispatch
Purchase unit: 1 unit = 1 seed (unless otherwise specified). We supply planting seeds, not edible nuts or ready-grown plants.
November 2026 Pre-Sale: this is a future-arrival seed lot, not stock currently in the USA. We may ship earlier if the lot reaches us ahead of schedule, passes physical and viability inspection, and can join an earlier shipment; however, earlier shipment is not guaranteed. Actual availability depends on receipt and seed condition. If any purchased quantity cannot be fulfilled, we will contact you and arrange a refund or an agreed alternative.
Taxonomic note: Astrocaryum campestre is an accepted Brazilian palm species, but the identity of this aff. accession remains provisional. The product images document the actual source palm, fruits and seeds. See Kew POWO — Astrocaryum campestre for general species background.
