Description

Pouteria gardneri — “Sapotinha”, a rare purple-fruited Sapotaceae

Pouteria gardneri is an unusual South American fruit tree in the Sapotaceae family. It is native to Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay and is known locally as sapotinha. Its edible fruits are appreciated locally, while the species remains uncommon in international rare-fruit collections.

The fruits are especially attractive: rounded and green while developing, then ripening through reddish-purple tones to a deep purple / almost black coloration. The source describes the pulp as sweet.

  • Common name: Sapotinha
  • Native range: Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay
  • Fruit: rounded, ripening to deep purple / blackish-purple
  • Flavor: sweet edible pulp, according to the source

⚠️ SEPTEMBER 2026 PRE-SALE ITEM

This is a very limited initial release from a fresh collector seed lot reserved for our September batch.

Final fulfillment depends on the reserved seed lot arriving in suitable condition, followed by inspection, preparation, phytosanitary procedures where required, and international transport.

Germination and care

As with other fresh tropical fruit seeds, we recommend sowing promptly after arrival. Use a loose, organic and well-draining substrate and keep the seed warm and evenly moist during germination.

  • Do not leave the substrate permanently waterlogged.
  • Maintain warm conditions and good humidity.
  • Provide bright indirect light or partial shade to young seedlings.
  • Protect seedlings from drying winds and harsh afternoon sun while small.

A genuinely uncommon Sapotaceae with striking purple fruit — an excellent species for serious rare-fruit collectors.
