Description

This particular lot was received under the name “Biribá Humongous”, suggesting a selection associated with especially large fruits. Large-fruited forms of biribá are well known among tropical fruit collectors, and the species itself is capable of producing very impressive fruits under warm, humid conditions. This makes it a very attractive choice for rare fruit growers, Annona collectors, and anyone interested in unusual tropical fruits with both ornamental and culinary value.

The fruit is one of the most visually striking members of the Annonaceae. When mature, biribá fruits usually turn yellow and develop a soft, almost alien-looking surface with flexible, fleshy projections. The pulp is creamy, aromatic, and juicy, often described as having a tropical custard-like flavor, with notes that many growers compare to lemon custard, lemon meringue, or sweet tropical cream. Because ripe biribá fruits are delicate and do not ship well, growing the tree is often the only realistic way to experience the fruit at its best.

Biribá is also appreciated because it is generally a fast-growing Annona relative in tropical and warm subtropical climates. Under good conditions, young plants can grow quickly, developing into attractive small to medium-sized trees with large leaves and a lush tropical appearance. It is especially well suited to humid tropical regions, but can also be attempted in protected subtropical gardens, greenhouses, or warm microclimates.

This is a very limited July pre-sale lot. Seeds are offered as Biribá “Humongous”, a Brazilian large-fruited selection received under that name. As with most seed-grown Annonaceae, fruit size and exact characteristics may vary from plant to plant, but this material should be especially interesting for collectors looking for large-fruited biribá genetics.

Family: Annonaceae
Origin: Brazil / tropical South America

Flavor and Fruit Quality

Biribá is famous for its soft, creamy pulp and sweet tropical flavor. Many growers describe the taste as being similar to lemon custard, lemon cream, or lemon meringue pie, especially when the fruit is harvested fully ripe. The texture is delicate and juicy, making it excellent for eating fresh.

The fruit is also used in juices, smoothies, desserts, and tropical fruit preparations. However, because ripe biribá fruits are very soft and fragile, they are rarely found in markets outside producing regions. This makes the tree especially valuable for home growers and rare fruit collectors.

Growing Notes

Biribá prefers warm, humid growing conditions and performs best in tropical or near-tropical climates. It appreciates rich, well-draining soil, regular moisture, and protection from strong cold winds. Young plants should be protected from frost and very low temperatures.

In warm climates, the species can grow quickly, especially with steady moisture, organic matter, and partial protection when young. Like many Annonaceae, seedlings may benefit from warm soil temperatures and patience during germination.

Germination Instructions

Soak the seeds in clean water for 8–12 hours before sowing.

Plant about 0.5–1 cm deep in a warm, moist, well-draining substrate. A mix with peat, coco coir, perlite, vermiculite, or fine organic matter can work well, as long as it stays moist but never waterlogged.

Recommended germination conditions:

  • Temperature: 26–30 °C
  • Humidity: medium to high
  • Light: bright shade or indirect light
  • Depth: 0.5–1 cm
  • Moisture: constant, but not soggy
  • Germination time: usually several weeks, sometimes longer

Avoid letting the substrate dry out completely, but do not keep the seeds in stagnant or waterlogged conditions. Warmth is very important for successful germination.

Important Note

These seeds are sold as Biribá “Humongous”, a Brazilian large-fruited selection received under that name. Since these are seeds and not grafted/clonal plants, individual seedlings may show some natural variation in fruit size, shape, growth habit, and other characteristics.

This is normal for seed-grown tropical fruit trees, especially within the Annonaceae family.
