Description

An intensely aromatic wild Brazilian guava

Psidium rufum is a beautiful and uncommon Brazilian wild guava producing attractive pink-red to reddish fruits on a small ornamental tree.

What immediately caught our attention with this particular fruiting tree was not a claim of extreme sweetness — it was aroma.

According to our Brazilian collector, who knows and grows the plant locally, the ripe fruits are:

“More fragrant than common guava.”

He describes the flavor as distinctly tart, while also emphasizing the beauty of the fruit and the strong fragrance.

For collectors of the genus Psidium, this is exactly the kind of species that deserves more attention: a wild guava with its own distinctive fruit profile rather than simply another sweet commercial guava.

Fruit characteristics

The fruits ripen from green to beautiful shades of pink and red.

Based on the fruiting tree from which this seed lot was collected:

  • Pink-red to reddish ripe fruits
  • Rounded guava-like shape
  • Pale cream to yellowish flesh
  • Strong, pronounced fragrance
  • More aromatic than common guava according to the collector
  • Distinctly tart flavor
  • Attractive ornamental appearance

The pronounced acidity should not necessarily be seen as a disadvantage.

Highly aromatic tart fruits can be particularly interesting for preserves, sweets, flavoring, beverages and other preparations where fragrance and acidity are desirable. Other seed sellers have also described P. rufum fruit as suitable for sweet preparations or flavoring.

Why we find this species interesting

We have been growing and collecting Psidium species for many years, and we are particularly interested in the enormous diversity found within this genus.

Not every wild Psidium needs to taste like a commercial dessert guava to be valuable.

Psidium rufum combines several interesting characteristics:

  • Rare in international cultivation
  • Beautiful pink-red fruit
  • Strong aromatic character
  • Edible wild fruit
  • Compact ornamental tree
  • Interesting culinary potential
  • Brazilian native species
  • Excellent species for serious Psidium collections

The species is documented from Brazil and has been associated with Cerrado and Atlantic Forest environments. Published research also notes that information about the species remains relatively limited.

Fresh seed lot

These are real seeds from the fruiting tree shown in our photographs.

The seeds were recently collected and cleaned by our Brazilian source. We have also received photographs of the actual seed lot before dispatch.

This is not an old generic seed-bank offering.

Germination notes

The collector reports that this species germinates well.

Interestingly, published laboratory research on Psidium rufum also provides unusually useful germination information.

In experimental conditions, the best results were obtained at approximately 25°C / 77°F, and germination was favored by the presence of light. The species was classified as preferentially positively photoblastic. Average germination time in the light/dark experiment was around 20 days.

For growers, we recommend:

  • Sow fresh seeds upon arrival.
  • Use a light, well-draining substrate.
  • Keep evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Aim for approximately 24–26°C / 75–79°F.
  • Do not bury excessively deep.
  • Provide light during germination.
  • Avoid constant excessive heat.

Laboratory results do not guarantee identical germination under home growing conditions, but the published research gives us a very useful starting point.
