Description

Eugenia itacarensis is a rare yellow-fruited Eugenia from the Itacaré region of Bahia, Brazil.

This material is especially interesting because the fruits are described as large, very pulpy, and extremely sweet. Unlike some wild Eugenias that are valued mainly for rarity or ornamental appeal, this one seems to have real eating potential: a fleshy yellow fruit with juicy pulp and a pleasant sweet profile.

The fruits shown in the source material are rounded to slightly irregular, yellow to golden-yellow when mature, with some natural brown spotting on the skin. When opened, the fruit shows a juicy yellow-orange interior with visible pulp fibers and a soft, fleshy texture.

This is a very interesting collector’s Eugenia for people looking not only for rarity, but also for promising edible quality.

Why it is special

  • Rare Eugenia from Bahia, Brazil.
  • Yellow-fruited Itacaré material.
  • Large fruits for this group.
  • Abundant pulp.
  • Described as extremely sweet.
  • Collector’s material from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest region.
  • Good candidate for growers interested in rare edible Myrtaceae.
  • Very limited July batch availability.

Fruit description

The fruits are yellow to golden-yellow at maturity, with a rounded shape and a slightly rustic wild-fruit appearance.

The skin may show natural brown markings or spotting, which is normal for this type of wild fruit material. The interior appears juicy, fibrous, and pulpy, with a rich yellow-orange tone.

This selection is especially interesting because it is described as having much more pulp than many small-fruited Eugenias, along with a very sweet flavor.

Flavor notes

The available field information describes this material as:

Very pulpy and extremely sweet.

That makes it a stronger edible candidate than many rare Eugenias that are sold mainly because they are unusual or ornamental.

Because this is still rare and poorly documented, flavor may vary between individual plants grown from seed.

Plant notes

This should be treated as a warm-humid Atlantic Forest Eugenia.

Expected growing style:

  • Small to medium tropical/subtropical fruit tree.
  • Best in warm, humid conditions.
  • Prefers rich, organic, well-draining soil.
  • Young plants should be protected from harsh direct sun.
  • Suitable for pot culture while young.
  • Should be protected from frost.

Fresh recalcitrant seeds

Like most Eugenia species, these seeds should be considered recalcitrant. They do not tolerate drying and should be planted as soon as possible after arrival.

Depending on transit time, some seeds may already be starting to germinate.

Germination advice

  • Sow immediately upon arrival.
  • Keep seeds moist but never waterlogged.
  • Use a well-draining mix with organic matter, such as peat/coir plus perlite.
  • Ideal temperature: 24–28°C / 75–82°F.
  • Keep in bright shade or filtered light.
  • Avoid harsh direct sun while seedlings are young.
  • Maintain humidity, but allow some airflow.
  • Never allow the seeds to dry completely.

Important July batch shipping note

This item belongs to our July Pre-Sale batch.

We strongly recommend ordering July batch seeds together, so they can be shipped in the same fresh-seed shipment.

When combining this item with seeds from other batches, the safest option is to add only dry/tolerant seeds, or to pay for a second shipment. Fresh Myrtaceae seeds may sprout or lose quality when held too long waiting for items from another batch.

Orders containing items from different batches may require a split shipment for best seed quality.

Note

This is rare collector material from Brazil. The exact botanical status and long-term seedling variation are still being observed.

Photos and descriptions are based on the source fruits and available field information.
