Description
Eugenia cf. pyriformis “Giant Uvaia” — Bahia Atlantic Forest
This is one of the most visually impressive uvaia-type accessions we have offered: a rare giant-fruited Eugenia collected in the Atlantic Forest of Bahia, Brazil. The fruits are bright golden yellow and conspicuously larger than the common uvaia forms usually seen in cultivation.

- Origin: Atlantic Forest, Bahia, Brazil
- Identification: Eugenia cf. pyriformis — collector/source identification; exact species still provisional
- Fruit: exceptionally large, bright golden-yellow uvaia-type fruit
- Form: pyriform to broadly pear-shaped, with the characteristic ribbing seen in uvaia-type fruits
- Rarity: limited collector accession
- Seed lot: 25 seeds secured from the source
Why this accession is interesting
Published research on Eugenia pyriformis shows substantial natural variation among accessions in fruit size, shape, color, aroma and texture. In one Brazilian study, even the population classified as “large-fruited” averaged about 22 g, with fruits around 3.1 × 3.9 cm and very high pulp yield. The Bahia material offered here is visually remarkable even against that general uvaia background; however, we are not assigning an exact fruit measurement until this accession is formally measured.
Typical E. pyriformis fruit is described in scientific literature as yellow to orange, soft-pulped, with a distinctive fruity aroma and a sweet-acid flavor. Those characteristics are useful context for this close relative / cf. material, but should not be interpreted as a laboratory characterization of this exact Bahia accession.

Fresh-seed handling
Research on Eugenia pyriformis shows that uvaia seeds are recalcitrant and sensitive to drying. For that reason, treat this lot as fresh/wet Eugenia seed: sow promptly in a loose, organic and well-draining medium, keep evenly moist and warm, and do not intentionally dry the seeds.
