Description

A rare Brazilian fruiting vine with Italia grape-like flavor

Uva-do-Mato “Scarlet” is an unusual Brazilian fruiting vine producing beautiful clusters of scarlet to red-purple fruits.

The fruits are small, approximately 1.5 cm, juicy, and were directly described from tasting as having a pleasant flavor reminiscent of Italia grape.

Scarlet fruit clusters + juicy pulp + Italia grape-like flavor.

This is one of the most visually and horticulturally different materials in our August 2026 collection. Just 8 seeds total!

Flavor reminiscent of Italia grape

The Brazilian collector who directly tasted the seed-source fruit compared its flavor to Italia grape.

The fruits are described as:

Pleasant in flavor
Juicy
Approximately 1.5 cm
Grape-like in eating character

Flavor comparisons are naturally subjective, but this description comes from direct tasting of the actual seed-source material.

Spectacular scarlet fruit clusters

The fruits develop in attractive clusters and mature with striking scarlet to red-purple coloration.

The visual effect is extremely ornamental.

Unlike the many rare Brazilian fruit trees normally offered in our collection, this material is a climbing vine.

This creates completely different possibilities for collectors with fences, pergolas, trellises, or established trees suitable for supporting a vigorous fruiting vine.

A climbing rare fruit plant

The seed-source plant grows as a vine and was observed climbing through existing vegetation.

According to field information associated with the accession, it can be grown with support from a tree or trained over a trellis or pergola-type structure.

The plant may be grown with varying exposure to shade and sunlight depending on local conditions.

As with any wild-collected accession, final vigor and cultivation behavior may vary according to climate, soil, and growing conditions.

Brazilian native material

This fruiting vine is associated with native Brazilian material occurring in Bahia and Mato Grosso.

The seed-source material offered in this pre-sale was collected in Bahia, Brazil.

Fruit-bearing vines of this type remain extremely uncommon in the international rare fruit seed trade.

Taxonomic identification

The precise scientific identity of this accession has not yet been conclusively confirmed.

A possible affinity with Disciphania has been considered, including comparison with material referred to as Disciphania ernstii.

However, we prefer not to present a definitive species identification without sufficient botanical evidence.

For this reason, the material is offered under the traceable working name:

Uva-do-Mato “Scarlet”

Collectors should maintain this accession separately and preserve its provenance information.

Why this accession is exceptional

The attraction of Uva-do-Mato “Scarlet” is completely different from most rare fruit trees:

Scarlet fruit clusters
Italia grape-like flavor
Juicy fruit
Rare Brazilian vine
Can be trained on a trellis or pergola
Unresolved collector material

For advanced rare fruit growers, this is a chance to add a completely different growth habit and visual character to a collection dominated by trees and shrubs.

It looks unusual, grows differently, and has a very easy-to-understand flavor comparison.
