Description
Botanical Description:
Myrcia selloi is a semi-deciduous shrub or small tree, typically reaching heights between 2.5 to 5 meters. It features a dense, upright crown with a straight, cylindrical trunk measuring 20–30 cm in diameter. The leaves are coriaceous or chartaceous, elliptic to oblong, measuring 1.5–5.5 cm in length and 0.8–3 cm in width, with conspicuous reticulate venation on both surfaces. The plant produces fragrant flowers arranged in panicles up to 5 cm long, each bearing 4–15 pedicellate flowers. The fruits are globose, turning a reddish-orange upon ripening, with a diameter of approximately 5 mm.
Cultivation and Growth Conditions:
Native to regions including Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, southern Brazil, and Bolivia, Myrcia selloi thrives in semi-deciduous forests and Araucaria pine forests, favoring moist, shaded environments. It prefers dappled shade and is considered slow-growing. Propagation is typically achieved through seeds, which are best sown as soon as they are ripe in partially shaded nursery beds or individual containers. Germination can be slow, often taking 30–50 days, and the germination rate may be low.
Uses and Applications:
The sweet, dark reddish-orange fruits of Myrcia selloi are edible and can be consumed raw. Beyond its culinary appeal, the tree is valued for its ornamental qualities, particularly its decorative bark, making it suitable for landscaping and as a street tree under power lines. The wood is compact, moderately heavy, very elastic, and durable, making it useful for poles, tool handles, rafters, and as fuel. Tropical Ferns
