Description

Pouteria sp. “Amazon Pink Abiu” — a spectacular Amazonian pink/purple abiu-type fruit

This highly distinctive material was supplied as a Pouteria / abiu-type fruit from the Brazilian Amazon. The source reports these materials from the Acre / Amapá region.

Because the exact botanical identity has not yet been confirmed, we are intentionally offering it under the provisional name Pouteria sp. “Amazon Pink Abiu”, rather than assigning it to Pouteria caimito or another species without sufficient evidence.

Large fruit with unusual pink-to-purple skin

The field photos and video make this accession especially compelling. The fruits are large and rounded, with mature material showing attractive pink, reddish-wine and purple tones. When opened, the fruit reveals a generous amount of white to cream, dense, moist-looking pulp surrounding dark seeds.

  • Origin: Brazilian Amazon — Acre / Amapá region reported by the source
  • Genus: Pouteria
  • Current identification: provisional abiu-type accession; exact species pending
  • Fruit color: pink / wine / purple tones in the mature material shown
  • Fruit size: large in the documented field material
  • Pulp: abundant, white to cream, thick and moist-looking
  • Flavor: described by the source as a rich, tasty abiu-type fruit

A separate Amazonian accession

This pink/purple form is being documented alongside a contrasting green-fruited Pouteria / abiu-type form. Until their exact botanical relationship is clarified, we are treating them as separate field accessions, not formally named cultivars or varieties.
