Plinia sp. “Camacã” — rare sweet yellow-fruited Plinia from Bahia

A very unusual yellow-fruited Plinia from Camacã, Bahia, Brazil, reportedly producing fruits up to approximately 4 cm with very sweet pulp and edible skin.

The current material comes from an old fruiting tree growing in a humid area of southern Bahia. The collector describes the site as comparatively cool for the region, adding another interesting ecological detail to this still poorly known accession.

Sweet pulp, edible skin and large yellow fruit

One of the most appealing characteristics of this accession is its reported fruit quality. According to the collector, the ripe yellow-to-golden fruits have very sweet pulp, while the skin is also edible.

Opened fruits show pale, juicy-looking flesh surrounded by a relatively thin yellow rind. Reported fruit size can reach approximately 4 cm, making it an especially attractive collector Plinia.

This material is maintained under the collector name Plinia sp. “Camacã”, referring to its locality of origin rather than to a formally confirmed botanical species.

We deliberately preserve that designation instead of assigning an unsupported species name. For collectors, the combination of yellow fruit, reported large size, very sweet pulp and edible skin makes this accession particularly interesting even while its precise taxonomic identity remains unresolved.

Although the source locality was described as humid and comparatively cool, this should not be interpreted as evidence of frost tolerance. Until plants are tested under cultivation in different climates, we recommend treating it as a tropical to subtropical Plinia and protecting young plants from freezing temperatures.
