This newly secured Plinia callosa accession immediately stood out for one reason: the fruit is extraordinary.

The documented source fruits are large and rounded, with a striking range of mature coloration from intense pink-red to deep burgundy and purple. In the same seed-source material, some fruits remain bright red while others become dramatically darker as they mature, giving this accession a very different visual character from the pale-fruited P. callosa material more often seen in older collector circulation.

The material is identified at source as Plinia callosa. We are keeping the darker form under a conservative collector designation — Dark Red / Purple-Fruited Accession — rather than presenting it as a formally named cultivar or botanical variety.

About Plinia callosa

Plinia callosa Sobral is an accepted species of Myrtaceae native to Brazil. It belongs to the same remarkable fruit-tree group that includes jaboticabas, cambucá and many of the most sought-after Brazilian Plinia species.

Because rare Plinia accessions are often circulated from individual trees or small cultivated populations, we prefer to preserve the identity attached to the source material while avoiding unsupported cultivar claims.

A different-looking Callosa

We have worked with another P. callosa accession previously. This new material is being kept separate because the documented fruits show a much stronger red to dark burgundy/purple pigmentation.

At this stage we do not claim that the color difference represents a formally stable variety. Seed-grown plants are genetically individual, and the exact degree of fruit pigmentation may vary among seedlings. The photographs and description refer to the seed-source accession.

Flavor

We are deliberately leaving the flavor description open until tasting information from this exact accession is confirmed. Reports from other P. callosa accessions should not automatically be transferred to this material.

For this first release, the strongest documented characteristics are its rarity, fruit size and extraordinary coloration.
