Myrciaria sp. “Yasuní” — Ecuadorian Amazon collector rarity

This material circulates among collectors as Myrciaria sp. “Yasuní” or “Jaboticaba de Yasuní”. We are deliberately keeping the identification at Myrciaria sp. rather than presenting “Myrciaria yasunii” as a formally described species.

• Origin reported by source: Ecuadorian Amazon / Yasuní
• Fruit: dark to purple; around 1.5 cm according to Clayton
• Flavor: wonderful, very sweet, with pleasant jaboticaba-like notes
• Skin: thin, sweet and edible; reported to split/pop easily when fully ripe
• Habit: approximately 2–3.5 m in the ground
• Containers: source reports fruiting at reduced size in pots

Do not confuse this accession with Plinia yasuniana, a formally described and morphologically different Yasuní species.

Germination and care

Sow fresh Myrciaria seed promptly; do not intentionally dry it. Keep warm, evenly moist and humid in a loose, well-draining organic substrate.
