Description

Fusaea longifolia is a rare tropical fruit species in the Annonaceae family, the same family as annonas, soursop, cherimoya, rollinia, and many other highly valued tropical fruits.

This species is native to northern South America and Brazil, where it grows as an evergreen shrub or tree in forest habitats. It is still very uncommon in cultivation and rarely offered as seed.

The fruits are globose, usually around 4–6 cm in diameter, and are reported to have a pleasant sweet flavor with a somewhat mealy texture. Locally, the fruit is appreciated and harvested from the wild.

This is a very interesting species for collectors of rare Annonaceae, Amazonian fruit trees, and unusual edible forest fruits.

Why it is special

  • Rare South American Annonaceae.
  • Related to Annona and other tropical custard-apple relatives.
  • Edible fruit with sweet, pleasant pulp.
  • Globose fruits, around 4–6 cm.
  • Very uncommon in cultivation.
  • Good collector species for tropical fruit growers.
  • Interesting material for people preserving rare edible forest fruits.
  • Very limited July batch availability.

Fruit description

The fruit is globose, smooth, and medium-sized for a wild Annonaceae, usually described around 4–6 cm in diameter.

The pulp is reported as sweet and pleasant, with a somewhat mealy texture. This makes it different from very juicy annonas, but still interesting as an edible wild fruit.

Because this species is still rare in cultivation, fruit quality may vary between individual seedlings.

Plant notes

Fusaea longifolia can grow as an evergreen shrub or tree, potentially becoming a medium to large tropical forest tree under ideal conditions.

It should be treated as a warm, humid tropical Annonaceae.

Recommended conditions:

  • Warm tropical/subtropical climate.
  • High humidity.
  • Rich, organic, well-draining soil.
  • Partial shade while young.
  • Protection from frost.
  • Suitable for container culture while young.

For colder climates, grow in a pot and overwinter in a warm, bright, frost-free place.

Fresh seeds

Like many tropical Annonaceae, these seeds should be sown fresh for best results.

They should not be stored for long periods, and germination may be slower or irregular compared with Myrtaceae.

Germination advice

  • Sow fresh seeds as soon as possible after arrival.
  • Optional: soak seeds for 12–24 hours before sowing.
  • Use a warm, moist, well-draining substrate.
  • Ideal temperature: 26–30°C / 79–86°F.
  • Sow about 1–2 cm deep.
  • Keep moist, but never waterlogged.
  • Germination may take several weeks or longer.
  • Maintain warmth and patience; Annonaceae can be slow.

Important July batch shipping note

This item belongs to our July Pre-Sale batch.

We strongly recommend ordering July batch seeds together, so they can be shipped in the same fresh-seed shipment.

When combining this item with seeds from other batches, the safest option is to add only dry/tolerant seeds, or to pay for a second shipment. Fresh tropical seeds may lose quality when held too long waiting for items from another batch.

Orders containing items from different batches may require a split shipment for best seed quality.

Note

This is rare collector material. Seedling variation is possible.
