Description

Eugenia sp. “Frankistay” — rare deeply ribbed Brazilian Eugenia

Eugenia sp. “Frankistay” is one of the most visually distinctive rare Eugenia accessions currently circulating among Brazilian fruit collectors. Its golden-yellow fruits develop unusually deep longitudinal ribs, creating an almost sculptural appearance.

The material is reported from Maranhão, Brazil. Its exact species identity has not yet been established, so we retain the honest provisional identification Eugenia sp. and the collector name “Frankistay”.

Eugenia sp. Frankistay — deeply ribbed golden-yellow Brazilian fruits

Fruit and collector interest

  • Fruit: golden-yellow to yellow-orange, with exceptionally pronounced longitudinal ribs and deep grooves.
  • Appearance: highly distinctive, ornamental and immediately recognizable among rare-fruit collections.
  • Reported origin: Maranhão, Brazil.
  • Flavor: still being documented. Different reports exist around closely related or similarly named forms, so no specific flavor claim is guaranteed for this accession.
  • Rarity: a very uncommon collector accession with little published information available.

Foliage and plant

The foliage is another useful feature for future comparison as this accession becomes established in more collections. Maintaining each morphotype separately will allow growers to compare leaves, flowers, fruit morphology, growth and flavor over time.

Botanical identity — an exploratory accession

This plant remains an unidentified Eugenia. Several unusual ribbed-fruit forms are currently known among collectors, and some informal names have been used inconsistently. For this reason, Huertas Urbanas keeps Frankistay, Minas Honey Drop and Minas Honey Pear as separate collector accessions rather than forcing a premature taxonomic conclusion.

This is part of the value of distributing rare material: as plants become established in collections around the world, growers can document their leaves, flowers, growth, fruits and flavor, gradually improving the available knowledge while helping preserve unusual genetic material in cultivation.

“Frankistay” is a collector name, not a formally described botanical cultivar.

⚠️ NOVEMBER 2026 PRE-SALE ITEM. One unit represents one fresh seed. Final fulfillment is subject to inspection of viable seed at the time the lot is prepared.

Germination and Care

Do not intentionally dry fresh Eugenia seeds. Sow promptly in an airy, organic, well-draining growing medium.

  • Keep the substrate evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Maintain good humidity during germination.
  • Protect young seedlings from temperature extremes.
  • Provide bright filtered light until plants are well established.
  • Germination speed may vary because this accession is still poorly documented in cultivation.
