Description
The fruits are deeply ribbed and sculptural, with red-pink to burgundy tones and bright green ridges, giving them a striking starfruit-like appearance. This Ilhéus form appears slightly different from the Itacaré material currently circulating among collectors, especially in foliage and fruit texture, but it likely belongs to the same rare “Carambola Eugenia” group.
July Pre-Sale: we strongly recommend ordering July batch seeds together. If you want to combine this with seeds from other batches, it is safest to choose dry/tolerant seeds only, or pay for a second shipment.
Eugenia sp. “Carambola do Ilhéus” is a rare locality form of the famous Eugenia sp. “Carambola”, a still-unidentified Brazilian Myrtaceae known for its spectacular ribbed fruits.
This group has already appeared in the international rare fruit seed market under the name Eugenia sp. “Carambola”, where it is valued mainly for its extraordinary ornamental fruit shape. The fruits are red to pinkish-red, with raised green ribs, giving them a sculptural appearance reminiscent of a small starfruit.
This Ilhéus material appears to represent a slightly different form from the Itacaré form seen in some collector references. The fruits look broadly similar — ribbed, red-pink, and green-ridged — but the foliage in the Ilhéus material appears longer, lighter green, more lanceolate, and somewhat more textured.
For that reason, we are offering it as:
Eugenia sp. “Carambola do Ilhéus”
This keeps the connection with the known “Carambola” Eugenia group, while also preserving the locality information.
Why it is special
- Rare Eugenia sp. from Bahia, Brazil.
- Ilhéus locality form of the famous “Carambola” Eugenia.
- Deeply ribbed, starfruit-shaped fruits.
- Red-pink fruit body with bright green ribs.
- Highly ornamental and visually dramatic.
- Related to material already valued by rare fruit collectors.
- Very limited July batch availability.
- Excellent for collectors of rare Myrtaceae and unusual Brazilian fruit trees.
Fruit description
The fruit is strongly ribbed and folded, with raised green ridges and red-pink to burgundy flesh tones between the ribs.
The overall shape resembles a small sculptural starfruit, a ribbed pitanga, or a botanical curiosity from the Atlantic Forest. This fruit is visually one of the most dramatic forms among rare Eugenias.
Commercial references to Eugenia sp. “Carambola” emphasize its ornamental value more than intense flavor. The fruit is considered edible, but the real appeal is the extraordinary shape and coloration.
Leaf and plant notes
The leaves visible in this Ilhéus form appear elongated, bright to medium green, lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate, with a marked central vein and somewhat wavy or textured surface.
This differs somewhat from the Itacaré-looking material, whose leaves appear darker, glossier, and broader in the available photos.
This may simply reflect natural variation within the same species or complex, different plant age, lighting, or even individual variation. For now, the most cautious label is:
Eugenia sp. “Carambola do Ilhéus”
Fresh recalcitrant seeds
Like most Eugenia species, these seeds should be considered recalcitrant. They do not tolerate drying and should be planted as soon as possible after arrival.
Depending on transit time, some seeds may already be starting to germinate.
Germination advice
- Sow immediately upon arrival.
- Keep seeds moist but never waterlogged.
- Use a well-draining mix with organic matter, such as peat/coir plus perlite.
- Ideal temperature: 24–28°C / 75–82°F.
- Keep in bright shade or filtered light.
- Avoid harsh direct sun while seedlings are young.
- Maintain humidity, but allow some airflow.
- Do not let the seeds dry out completely.
Growing notes
This type should be treated like a warm-humid Atlantic Forest Eugenia.
Recommended conditions:
- Warm temperatures.
- High humidity.
- Bright shade or partial sun.
- Rich, acidic to slightly acidic, well-draining soil.
- Protection from frost.
- Container culture possible while young.
For colder climates, grow in a pot and overwinter in a bright, frost-free place.
Important July batch shipping note
This item belongs to our July Pre-Sale batch.
We strongly recommend ordering July batch seeds together, so they can be shipped in the same fresh-seed shipment.
If you want to combine this item with seeds from other batches, the safest option is to add only dry/tolerant seeds, or to pay for a second shipment. Fresh Myrtaceae seeds may sprout or lose quality if they are held too long waiting for items from another batch.
If your order contains items from different batches, we may contact you to suggest the safest shipping option.
Note
This is a rare collector’s item offered under a working name. The exact botanical identity is not yet confirmed.
The Ilhéus form appears closely related to the known Eugenia sp. “Carambola” from Bahia, but may show regional or individual variation in fruit and foliage.
Photos and descriptions are based on the source fruits and available collector/commercial information. Seedling variation is always possible.
