Description
A Eugenia with an extraordinary sweet banana-like flavor
Eugenia sp. “Bananinha” is an exceptionally unusual new Brazilian fruit material collected in Ilhéus, Bahia.
Its most remarkable characteristic is immediately obvious from the collector’s direct tasting description:
The flavor was described as approximately “90% sweet ripe banana”.
Yes — banana.
Not simply a generic tropical sweetness or a vague fruity resemblance. The Brazilian collector who directly tasted this fruit specifically compared its flavor to a sweet, fully ripe banana.
For an unidentified Eugenia, this is an extraordinarily unusual flavor profile.
Green when ripe
Another fascinating characteristic is the appearance of the mature fruit.
The fruits remain green when ripe, making visual maturity especially deceptive and giving the fruit a very distinctive appearance.
Fruits are reported to average approximately 5 cm.
The skin is described as edible and very sweet, adding another highly unusual characteristic to this accession.
Collector-reported fruit characteristics
Fruit size: Approximately 5 cm
Ripe fruit color: Green
Flavor: Extremely sweet; described as approximately “90% sweet ripe banana”
Skin: Edible and very sweet
Origin: Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil
These characteristics are based on direct observations and tasting by the Brazilian collector of the seed-source material.
Why “Bananinha”?
We are maintaining the collector’s working name “Bananinha” for this accession because of its remarkable banana-associated flavor.
The exact scientific identity has not yet been conclusively resolved.
For this reason, we are offering the material honestly as Eugenia sp. “Bananinha” rather than assigning a definitive species name without sufficient botanical evidence.
This is a distinct rare Brazilian fruit accession and should not be interpreted as a formally described cultivar or botanically confirmed species.
An extraordinary flavor profile for Eugenia collectors
The genus Eugenia contains an enormous diversity of fruit flavors, ranging from sweet and aromatic to acidic, resinous, spicy, or strongly tropical.
Even within that diversity, a fruit directly compared to sweet ripe banana is highly unusual.
The combination of:
Approximately 5 cm fruits
Green coloration when ripe
Very sweet flavor
Strong ripe-banana-like flavor association
Sweet edible skin
Rare Bahia origin
Unresolved scientific identity
makes “Bananinha” one of the most commercially and horticulturally fascinating Eugenia materials in our August collection.
Actual seed-source material
The fruits shown in our photographs represent the actual Brazilian seed-source material associated with the seeds offered in this pre-sale.
Flavor and fruit observations are derived from the collector’s direct experience with this material.
As with all seed-grown fruit trees, individual seedlings may show natural genetic variation.

Germination & Care
Eugenia seeds should generally be planted as soon as possible after arrival.
Use a moist, organic, loose and well-aerated growing medium with excellent drainage.
Keep the medium consistently moist but never permanently waterlogged.
Do not allow fresh Eugenia seeds to dry completely.
Warm conditions and bright indirect light or partial shade are recommended during early development.
Fresh Myrtaceae seeds may occasionally begin germinating during storage or transportation.
A seed arriving with an emerging root is alive and should be planted immediately.
Handle emerging roots carefully and avoid unnecessary manipulation.
Important Collector Note
This material is offered as Eugenia sp. “Bananinha” because the exact species identification remains unresolved.
We prefer to preserve the accession under its working collection name rather than force an unsupported scientific identification.
Its combination of green-ripe fruits, approximately 5 cm fruit size, sweet edible skin and an extraordinary ripe-banana-like flavor description makes it one of the standout new Eugenia accessions of our August 2026 collection.
