Description

Eugenia mattosii — a genuinely compact Brazilian Eugenia

Eugenia mattosii is an accepted species native to southern Brazil. Kew records it from Santa Catarina and classifies it as a shrub. Brazilian rare-fruit references describe a naturally low, densely branched plant, often around 40 cm to 1 m in cultivation, making it especially interesting for containers and small gardens.

Eugenia mattosii source plant — compact shrub with small bright-red fruits

The fruits are small and bright red. Specialist Brazilian horticultural descriptions report fruit around 0.8–1.3 cm, with fleshy, sweet pulp; e-Jardim similarly describes an approximately 1 cm glossy red fruit with sweet, watery flesh. The compact habit is arguably the strongest collector feature of this species.

  • Native range: southern Brazil
  • Habit: compact shrub; particularly suitable for small spaces
  • Fruit: small, bright red and edible
