Description

Myrciaria caerulescens is a fascinating and very rare fruit species native to Bahia, Brazil. It has only recently been formally described and is still extremely uncommon in cultivation.

On the rare occasions when seeds or plants have been offered by specialty collectors, they sold out quickly. At the moment, availability is essentially nonexistent — making this a rare opportunity to obtain this species.

The fruits are reported to have excellent flavor, often described as sweet, juicy, and aromatic, sometimes compared favorably to jaboticaba.

For collectors of rare Myrtaceae, jaboticaba enthusiasts, and tropical fruit growers, this species is considered one of the most exciting recent discoveries.

Origin

Native to Bahia in northeastern Brazil. The region experiences a warm climate with a pronounced dry season, which means the species may behave differently from rainforest jaboticabas that prefer constantly wet soil.

Cultivation Notes

This species appears relatively easy to grow if a few key points are respected.

Drainage is essential
Use a well-aerated substrate. Avoid compact or waterlogged soil.

Avoid overwatering
Unlike many jaboticabas, this species may dislike constantly saturated conditions.

Young plants still need moisture
Seedlings should not dry out completely. Keep the substrate lightly moist but never soggy.

Light
Bright light to partial sun works well. Young plants may benefit from some protection from intense midday sun.

Growth habit
Early growth is typically slow, eventually forming a compact shrub or small tree.

Germination

  • Sow seeds fresh whenever possible
  • Remove all fruit pulp before planting
  • Use a loose, well-drained substrate
  • Keep warm and lightly moist
  • Germination time may vary

Patience is often required with Myrtaceae seeds.

Pre-Sale Information

This item is part of our March / April Pre-Sale.

Seeds will be harvested and shipped to buyers approximately in late March.

Because these seeds are shipped fresh and slightly moist, it is strongly recommended to combine them with other pre-sale items rather than dry seed stock. This helps ensure optimal shipping conditions and freshness.

Availability

Extremely limited seed batch.

Once sold out, it may take a long time before seeds become available again.
