Sapotaceae sp. “Giant Lucuma” — a colossal fruit from Peru’s humid forests

There are rare fruits, and then there are fruits whose scale seems almost improbable.

This unidentified Peruvian Sapotaceae produces an exceptionally large green-to-yellow fruit and equally impressive dark, glossy seeds. According to the collector, it was found in humid forests of Peru and has a flavor reminiscent of canistel.

Its true botanical identity remains unresolved, so we refuse to force it into the name Pouteria lucuma merely because of a superficial resemblance. The mystery is part of the material — and documenting it correctly will be part of the cultivation story.

Final availability depends on natural fruit maturation, the number and condition of viable seeds actually collected, source-to-Argentina transport, phytosanitary preparation, inspection and international logistics.

Germination and early care

These large tropical Sapotaceae seeds should be sown fresh and should not be intentionally dried.

• Use a deep container and a loose, organic, well-draining substrate.
• Sow the seed shallowly or partly exposed, following its natural orientation.
• Keep the medium evenly moist but never waterlogged.
• Maintain warm conditions, approximately 24–30°C / 75–86°F.
• Provide bright filtered light and protect the first growth from intense sun.
• Allow generous root space: large-seeded Sapotaceae may develop a strong initial root system.

Because the botanical identity is still provisional, germination time and early growth behavior may vary.
