Description
Psidium cauliflorum Landrum & Sobral is one of the most unusual and collectible species of Psidium known from Brazil.
This species was originally described from Bahia and is remarkable for its true cauliflorous habit: the flowers and fruits are borne in clusters directly on older branches and trunks. This gives the plant a jaboticaba-like appearance, but it belongs to the guava/araçá genus Psidium.
The available photos of this Bahia material show fruits developing directly from the trunk, with both green immature fruits and dark purple to nearly black mature fruits. This strongly matches the distinctive cauliflorous character that gives the species its name.
This is a different material from the previous cauliflorous Psidium line we offered. That earlier line is now considered by us to be most likely Psidium cf. grazielae / grazielae-type, while this new Bahia material appears to correspond much more closely to the true Psidium cauliflorum Landrum & Sobral.
TAXONOMIC NOTES
- Accepted/provisional listing: Psidium cauliflorum Landrum & Sobral
- Family: Myrtaceae
- Origin: Bahia, Brazil
- Common/commercial name: True Cauliflorous Arazá / Trunk-Fruiting Psidium
- Distinctive trait: fruits borne in clusters on old branches and trunks
- Different from our previous cauliflorous Psidium line, now treated as Psidium cf. grazielae / grazielae-type
This is a very rare collector species and one of the most botanically interesting Psidium we have offered.
GERMINATION AND CARE
Sow as soon as possible after arrival. Psidium seeds are usually sensitive to drying and should be kept slightly moist, never waterlogged.
Recommended method:
- Sow in a well-draining mix, such as peat/coir with perlite or fine bark.
- Keep warm, ideally around 25–30 °C.
- Maintain steady moisture, but avoid standing water.
- Provide bright shade or filtered light.
- Do not allow the seedling mix to dry completely.
- Protect young seedlings from frost, intense sun, and drying winds.
- Germination may be irregular and may take several weeks.
For Psidium cauliflorum, alternating warm temperatures around 25–30 °C with some light exposure appear to be a good germination approach.
IMPORTANT PRE-SALE NOTE
This is part of a July pre-sale batch. Seeds will ship once the material arrives and passes basic quality control.
As with all rare tropical/subtropical Myrtaceae seeds, viability depends on freshness, transit time, and proper handling after arrival.
