Description
This is another remarkable member of the rare Psidium schenckianum / allied Bahia complex. Among the different aff. schenckianum forms I have received recently, #5 stands out immediately for its heavy fruiting and its plump, attractive fruits.
The plant in the photos is a dense, highly branched shrub or small tree, absolutely loaded with fruit. Botanically, it shows:
- Small, opposite, leathery leaves, mostly elliptic to obovate, with entire margins and a thick, tough texture.
- Foliage that appears compact and xeric-adapted, typical of wild Psidium from seasonally dry Brazilian environments.
- Globose fruits, green to pale yellow as they mature, often borne abundantly along the branches.
- A very visible persistent calyx crown at the fruit apex, giving the fruits that classic wild-guava look.
- Fruits that appear noticeably fuller and somewhat larger than those of some of the other aff. schenckianum accessions I’ve handled, making this one especially appealing.
The overall look is fantastic: a compact wild guava with dense foliage, excellent fruit set, and small yellowish fruits produced in striking abundance. It seems like a very promising plant both for collectors of rare Psidium and for anyone interested in unusual, potentially cold- and drought-tolerant South American fruit species.
