Plinia sp. “Rondônia” — sweet pale-green fruit from Rondônia

This unusual collector accession comes from Rondônia, Brazil. According to Clayton, the source plant was found in a natural area approximately 500 meters from a road. The plant is described as a medium-sized tree and fruits strongly cauliflorously, with rounded fruits developing directly on the trunk.

New photographs supplied by the source document the fruit at full maturity. The ripe fruits remain pale to light green, average about 2–3 cm, and contain a glossy translucent-to-whitish pulp. Clayton describes both the skin and pulp as succulent and sweet, and notes that the seeds are small.

Why we keep it as Plinia sp.

The foliage is especially interesting. The leaf shape and, above all, the reticulate venation pattern look clearly different from the Plinia aureana material we have compared directly. Clayton also states that the leaves do not resemble P. aureana, and for that reason referred informally to the material as “Plinia sp. rondoniense”.

We treat “rondoniense” only as a source/working label, not as a formally published scientific name. Until flowers, herbarium material or a specialist identification are available, the conservative commercial name Plinia sp. “Rondônia” is retained.

Interestingly, the pale-green ripe fruit can superficially recall P. aureana, while the foliage appears markedly different. This combination makes the accession particularly interesting for serious Plinia collectors.

Germination and care

Fresh Plinia seeds should not be intentionally dried. Sow promptly in a loose, organic and well-draining substrate; keep warm, humid and evenly moist, with bright filtered light during early establishment.
