Plinia cf. gentryi — an extraordinary Panama accession

Every so often a fruit appears that is rare not because it has been given a clever cultivar name, but because almost nobody in the collector world has had access to the underlying species at all.

This is one of those releases.

Our source obtained this material through a botanist working with rare Plinia from Panama. The material was supplied under the identification Plinia gentryi Barrie, an accepted species whose native range is recorded as Panama. Access to seed of unusual Panamanian Plinia is exceptionally difficult, and only a very small collector lot became available.

The fruit: extremely sweet, white, viscous pulp

The source describes the pulp as extremely sweet, white to translucent and distinctly viscous or gelatinous in texture — with a consistency compared to Cambucá, but with the sweetness expected from a premium Plinia.

The photographed fruits ripen yellow to golden-orange. When opened, they reveal glossy pale pulp around the seed. The seeds from this accession are notably elongated, another characteristic specifically noted by the botanist who supplied the material.

A species with very little public documentation

Plinia gentryi was formally published by botanist Fred R. Barrie in 2004 as part of his synopsis of Mesoamerican Plinia. In that work, P. gentryi was one of five newly described species from Panama. Modern botanical databases continue to recognize Plinia gentryi as an accepted Panamanian species.

The remarkable thing for fruit collectors is how little horticultural information is publicly available. Most searchable references are herbarium, floristic or taxonomic records rather than nursery catalogues, fruit reviews or seed listings. Even major botanical databases provide little or no living-fruit imagery for the species.

To our knowledge, we have not found a previous public commercial offering of seed under this accepted species name. This statement refers to publicly indexed sources we were able to research; private collector exchanges may of course have occurred.

Important taxonomic note

Because this material is exceptionally uncommon, we are using the conservative designation Plinia cf. gentryi. The original botanist identified it as P. gentryi, and its Panamanian origin strongly supports comparison with that species. However, our source also noted a possible resemblance to Plinia humaitana.

That alternative remains uncertain. Published botanical sources currently treat P. humaitana as a Brazilian Amazonian species known from Humaitá, Amazonas, whereas P. gentryi is formally recorded from Panama. Until additional voucher material or expert comparison is available, we prefer to preserve the provenance and the original identification without pretending that the question is completely closed.

For collectors, this uncertainty does not diminish the value of the accession: it is a genuinely unusual Panamanian Plinia with documented fruit, distinctive elongated seed morphology and exceptionally sweet white pulp.

Germination and early care

Fresh Plinia seeds are moisture-sensitive and should not be intentionally dried.

• Sow promptly after arrival.
• Use a loose, organic and well-draining substrate.
• Keep evenly moist but never waterlogged.
• Warm tropical conditions and high humidity are recommended for early establishment.
• Provide bright filtered light during germination and early seedling growth.
• If a seed arrives already initiating a root, handle it gently and avoid bending or breaking the emerging root.
