Description

This is an ultra-rare Myrtaceae with exceptional potential both as a collector’s plant and as a truly interesting edible fruit. The fruits are very attractive, ripening to a bright orange color, and the available photos suggest a notably fleshy fruit for this type of rare Eugenia — with juicy, succulent pulp surrounding the seeds and what appears to be a generous pulp-to-seed ratio. The flavor is reported to be sweet, with good eating quality, making this much more than just a botanical curiosity.

The plant is also highly ornamental, with broad, glossy, tropical-looking foliage and the classic opposite leaves typical of Myrtaceae. Even before fruiting, it should have strong appeal as a beautiful rare tropical/subtropical fruit tree.

The Atlantic Forest of Bahia is one of the most fascinating regions for rare Brazilian fruit species, and the genus Eugenia remains full of poorly known, under-collected, and potentially valuable edible fruits. This “Giant Plinioides” form stands out visually for its large orange fruits, thick-looking pulp, and lush foliage — a very unusual and exciting Eugenia for serious collectors, fruit breeders, and growers interested in the next generation of rare edible Myrtaceae.

This is a July pre-sale item. For best handling, we recommend combining it with dry seeds currently in stock in the USA or with other wet/recalcitrant seeds from this same batch.
