Eugenia sp. “Pindoca” — a rare fruit from southern Bahia
Eugenia sp. “Pindoca” is a very uncommon collector Eugenia from the southern part of Bahia, Brazil, within the Atlantic Forest region.
A recent Brazilian field/collector account adds several useful details about the fruit: the ripe fruit is dark purple, the pulp is sweet, and fruit that is not fully ripe can retain a light astringency. The seed is large in proportion to the fruit, with a delicate, non-stony seed coat; the observer notes that this may favor relatively quick germination.
The same account reports that native animals of the Hileia Baiana / southern Bahia Atlantic Forest feed eagerly on the fruit. The material was found by Lukas Daneu of Bio Expedições.

A note on the name
The humorous label “Eugenia quintasseriae” seen in the Brazilian post has no taxonomic validity; the author explicitly says it was a joke. We therefore keep the material conservatively as Eugenia sp. “Pindoca”.
The popular name Pindoca was discussed by the source as a vernacular name with possible Tupi associations; it should not be treated as a scientific identification.

Germination and care
Sow fresh Eugenia seed promptly in a loose, organic and well-draining substrate. Keep warm, evenly moist and humid, with bright filtered light during establishment. Because the seed coat is described as delicate rather than stony, avoid unnecessary scarification.
