Description
Eugenia sp. “Essência Negra” is a newly offered and extremely rare Eugenia from Bahia, Brazil.
This material was collected by a Brazilian rare fruit explorer and is being offered here under the provisional field/commercial name “Essência Negra”. At this stage, the exact botanical identity is not confirmed, so we are listing it conservatively as Eugenia sp.
The available photos show very distinctive glossy black fruits with orange pulp, together with an unusual lilac to purple juvenile leaf flush. This combination makes the plant especially interesting for rare fruit collectors, Eugenia enthusiasts, and growers looking for unusual ornamental fruiting species.
The fruit appears oval to slightly rounded, with dark purple-black to black skin and orange pulp. The young leaves shown in the available photos are strikingly pale purple/lilac, a feature that appears highly unusual among the Eugenia species we have seen in cultivation.
Because this is a very new material, more information about fruit size, tree habit, flavor, and exact habitat will be added later as we receive more details from the collector.

GERMINATION AND CARE
Sow as soon as possible after arrival. Eugenia seeds are usually sensitive to drying and should be kept slightly moist, never waterlogged.
Recommended method:
- Sow in a well-draining acidic mix, such as peat/coir with perlite or fine bark.
- Keep warm, ideally around 24–28 °C.
- Maintain steady moisture but avoid standing water.
- Grow in bright shade or filtered light during the first stage.
- Protect young seedlings from frost, strong sun, and drying winds.
- Once established, gradually acclimate to stronger light.
Because this is a rare and newly circulated Eugenia, germination and growth behavior may vary. Please treat the seeds carefully and keep conditions stable.
IMPORTANT PRE-SALE NOTE
This is part of a July pre-sale batch. Seeds will be shipped once the material arrives and passes basic quality control.
As with all rare recalcitrant tropical/subtropical seeds, viability depends on freshness, transit time, and proper handling after arrival.
