Description

Eugenia arenaria — a rare black-fruited Brazilian Eugenia

Eugenia arenaria is an accepted species native to southeastern and southern Brazil according to Kew. The source photographs show an especially attractive fruiting presentation: nearly black ripe fruits suspended on long reddish peduncles against glossy foliage.

A specialist Brazilian rare-fruit reference describes this species as a compact, often multi-stemmed shrub around 1–2.5 m, with small fruits that become black when fully ripe. The pulp is described as delicate and sweet, surrounding 1–3 small seeds. That source also reports good container performance and fruit quality superior to ordinary pitanga in its collection.

Because wild populations and cultivated accessions can vary, those measurements and flavor comparisons are horticultural reference points rather than guarantees for every seedling.

  • Accepted species: Eugenia arenaria Cambess.
  • Native range: southeastern and southern Brazil
  • Fruit: dark purple to black at maturity
  • Flavor: sweet, delicate pulp in Brazilian cultivation reports
  • Habit: compact shrub to small tree; attractive for containers
  • Collector appeal: rare, ornamental and edible
