Description
Carpotroche cf. brasiliensis is a very unusual Brazilian native tree, tentatively identified as close to Carpotroche brasiliensis, a species commonly known in Brazil as Sapucainha, Fruto-de-Paca, Fruta-de-Cotia, and other regional names.
This is not a common dessert fruit in the usual commercial sense, but it is a fascinating native forest species with high collector, ecological, ornamental, and ethnobotanical interest. The fruits are highly distinctive: green, ribbed, somewhat sculptural capsules that open to reveal a vivid orange pulp containing numerous seeds.
The tree is also considered very attractive and useful for native planting, wildlife support, and reforestation projects. The fruits are known to be appreciated by wild animals, which is one reason this species is valued in ecological restoration and native forest systems.
Our seeds come from a Brazilian native fruit collector. The identification is currently treated with caution as Carpotroche cf. brasiliensis, because the material has not yet been formally confirmed by a specialist. The photos show the original fruits, pulp, tree habit, and seeds from the source plant.

Seed notes
These seeds are being offered for cultivation and conservation purposes. They are already cleaned, wet, and ready to ship. For best results, sow after arrival or store cool and protected until sowing.
Suggested storage: keep seeds in a cool, dry, dark place. Refrigeration may be useful for short-term storage, but do not freeze.
Germination
Sow in a well-drained but moisture-retentive substrate. Keep warm, lightly moist, and protected from direct harsh sun during early germination. Germination may be irregular and can take time, as this is a wild native forest species and not a domesticated crop.
Suggested method:
- Soak seeds in clean water for 12–24 hours.
- Sow 0.5–1 cm deep in a clean, well-drained substrate.
- Keep warm and lightly moist, never waterlogged.
- Provide bright shade or filtered light.
- Be patient; germination may be slow or uneven.
Important note
This species is offered as Carpotroche cf. brasiliensis. The “cf.” means that the material appears to match or be very close to Carpotroche brasiliensis, but the identification is not guaranteed as a formally verified botanical determination.
Seeds are sold for growing, collecting, conservation, and research purposes only. No medicinal or food-use claims are made.
