This remarkable Annona coriacea comes from Maranhão, northeastern Brazil, where the mother tree grows as part of the native vegetation.

While Annona coriacea is already a fascinating South American native fruit species, this particular Maranhão material immediately caught our attention because of the exceptional appearance of the fruit and the extraordinary amount of edible pulp visible when opened.

The fruits are large, rounded to broadly oval, with the rustic outer surface characteristic of the species. Once opened, however, the interior is the real attraction: the fruit contains a very generous mass of thick golden-yellow to orange-yellow pulp, arranged around numerous glossy dark brown seeds.

The Brazilian source who collected this material described the pulp very enthusiastically as “absolutely incredible”. The photographs of the actual fruit support why this accession was selected: compared with many wild Annonaceae, the pulp-to-seed presentation is visually impressive, with substantial fleshy sections surrounding the seeds.

Wild Material from Maranhão

This is not anonymous nursery seed or generic commercial Annona coriacea. The seeds come from a documented native fruiting tree in Maranhão, and the photographs shown on this page correspond to the actual source tree, fruits and seeds from this material.

Maranhão lies in an exceptionally interesting botanical transition zone of northeastern Brazil, influenced by several major ecosystems and home to a rich diversity of native fruit species. For collectors of rare Annonaceae, provenance such as this is particularly valuable.

Why This Particular Form Is Interesting

Wild Annonaceae can vary considerably from tree to tree. Some forms produce relatively little edible pulp, while others stand out immediately for fruit size, pulp quantity, texture or flavor.

This Maranhão tree appears to belong to the latter group. The opened fruits show large fleshy pulp segments and an unusually attractive edible portion, making this material especially interesting both for rare-fruit collectors and for growers interested in selecting superior forms of native Brazilian Annona species.

For us, that individual-tree selection is important. We are not offering this simply because the botanical name is rare; we selected it because the actual mother tree is producing fruit worth propagating.

Seed Germination

The collector specifically reports that seeds from this material germinate well. As with most Annona species, germination speed can vary according to seed freshness, temperature, substrate and growing conditions.

For best results, we recommend sowing the seeds soon after arrival in a warm, well-drained medium and maintaining stable moisture without waterlogging. Patience is always advisable with rare Annonaceae, even when the seed lot has shown good viability.

A Rare Brazilian Native for Serious Collectors

Annona coriacea is much less commonly encountered in international rare-fruit collections than the familiar sugar apple, cherimoya, atemoya or soursop. Genuine fresh seed with known geographic origin and photographs of the producing tree and fruit is particularly difficult to obtain outside Brazil.

This combination of rarity, documented Maranhão provenance, impressive fruit and reported good germination makes this one of the more interesting native Annona introductions in our current Brazilian collections.
