Description

A truly exciting and under-the-radar Psidium species from Bahia, Brazil — confirmed as Psidium minutiflorum by Brazilian specialist and collector Helton Josué.

Bahia is one of the richest regions in the world for wild Psidium, with extremely high biodiversity and many endemic species still poorly known or not widely cultivated . This species belongs to that rare group of native guavas that combine adaptation, productivity, and real flavor quality.

🌿 Botanical & ecological profile

  • Family: Myrtaceae
  • Species: Psidium minutiflorum
  • Origin: Bahia, Brazil
  • Growth habit: Compact shrub / small tree
  • Adaptation: Likely tolerant to seasonal dryness (cerrado / transitional environments)

Like other wild Psidium, it shows strong adaptation to tougher conditions, with thick leaves and high resilience — traits commonly found in species from seasonally dry tropical biomes .

🍈 Fruit characteristics

  • Size: ~2 cm diameter
  • Shape: round to slightly oval
  • Color: green → bright yellow when ripe
  • Surface: smooth, fine dotted (typical Myrtaceae glands)
  • Production: very heavy fruit set

This is a small but abundant fruit type, ideal for continuous harvesting rather than occasional large fruits.

🍋 Flavor profile (standout feature)

This is where things get interesting.

According to the collector:

  • Unripe: fresh citrus-like acidity
  • Near ripe: balanced sweet-acid
  • Fully ripe: sweet, aromatic, very pleasant

👉 Described as: “my favorite Psidium”

Unlike many obscure species that are ornamental or bitter, this one is fully edible and selected for taste.

⭐ Why this species matters

  • Excellent reported flavor
  • High productivity
  • Rare in cultivation
  • Native to a biodiversity hotspot

👉 This is not just a curiosity —
