(An Ultra-Rare Wild Peritassa sp from Brazil)

Introducing an extraordinary and virtually unknown Saputá/Pacurí from Brazil — a dark-fruited form native to the region of Congonhas do Norte (Minas Gerais).

Unlike the typical descriptions of related saputá species as vines or low-growing plants, this material comes from a large tree, not a vine (cipó). According to the collector, some individuals reach approximately 15 meters in height, with fruits hanging from long branches. The leaves also appear slightly serrated, adding another layer of distinction compared with other Brazilian Garcinia-type material.

Description

This selection stands apart immediately: deep black to near-obsidian skin, smooth spherical fruits, and a striking visual presence rarely seen among saputá-type fruits from Brazil.

Inside, the fruit reveals a translucent, gelatinous pulp with large seeds — a classic saputá profile — and a glossy, jewel-like appearance that makes the fruit instantly memorable.

At this stage, this material is best understood as a Peritassa-type saputá from Congonhas, Minas Gerais, and it may be closely allied to the Peritassa hatschbachii / saputá azul group, though the tree-form habit (not a vine (cipó)) and slightly serrated leaves suggest it may not match the standard cultivated descriptions perfectly. In other words, this is not just a routine named selection — it is field material with a distinct phenotype and a likely regional identity of its own.

This is not a standardized nursery offering.
This is field material — and very likely a localized or under-documented form.

Origin

Collected from a long-established tree in Congonhas, Minas Gerais, Brazil, reportedly planted decades ago. This suggests either an introduced Atlantic Forest genotype, a long-established cultivated tree, or a localized population adapted to inland conditions.

Long-Term Pre-Sale Notice

Seeds will be shipped during May–June, following careful harvest and handling to preserve viability and quality.

Why this matters

• Extremely limited availability in cultivation
• No consistent international seed distribution
• Belongs to a poorly studied and taxonomically unsettled group
• Distinct dark-fruited phenotype, rare among saputá-type fruits
• Strong collector appeal due to origin, phenotype, and uncertainty
• Potential for selection, study, and future cultivar development

The fruit itself follows a classic saputá profile: sweet, aromatic, and translucent. As with many wild or semi-wild Peritassa-type fruits, full characterization is still emerging — making this an opportunity not just to grow, but to evaluate and define.

Cultivation Notes (Preliminary)

As with most saputá / Pacurí-type species, expect preference for warm temperatures, stable humidity, and well-drained organic substrates. Fresh seeds are critical, and early-stage care will strongly influence success.

Ordering Guidance

This is a long-term pre-sale item and is best combined with other May–June pre-sale selections, or with dry seed stock currently available in the USA.

We strongly advise against combining this item with moist or recalcitrant seeds in extended holding scenarios, as viability may decline.

Velvet Black Pacurí represents a rare opportunity in tropical fruit collecting — not just to acquire a fruit, but to engage with a little-known line of material at an early stage of its wider exposure.
