Description
Myrciaria vexator, commonly known among tropical-fruit collectors as the Blue Grape or False Jaboticaba, is an attractive member of the Myrtaceae family producing striking dark blue to purple fruits.
The fruits develop a naturally waxy blue appearance that makes the tree highly ornamental when in production. Inside, they contain pale, juicy pulp surrounding one or more seeds. The flavor is generally appreciated as pleasantly sweet to sweet-tart, depending on ripeness and growing conditions.
Although it is related to jaboticabas, Myrciaria vexator normally produces its fruits on the branches rather than covering the trunk in the strongly cauliflorous manner seen in many classic jaboticabas.
Why collectors grow it
- Dark blue to purple edible fruits
- Juicy, pale-colored pulp
- Highly ornamental evergreen foliage
- Suitable for tropical and warm subtropical collections
- Can be maintained as a compact fruiting tree with pruning
- Well-known and appreciated among rare-fruit collectors
- Limited fresh seed availability
Growing notes
Sow the seeds promptly after arrival. Use a clean, well-draining substrate such as coco fiber or peat mixed with perlite, fine bark, or coarse sand.
Plant approximately 1–2 cm deep and keep the medium evenly moist, but never saturated or waterlogged.
Recommended germination temperature:
24–30°C / 75–86°F
Provide warmth, stable humidity, and bright filtered light after germination. Young seedlings should initially be protected from intense midday sun, cold temperatures, and drying winds.
As with most tropical Myrtaceae, germination speed and final viability can vary according to seed freshness, transport time, temperature, and cultivation conditions.
Climate
This is primarily a tropical to warm-subtropical species. In cooler climates, young plants should be protected from frost and may be grown in containers so they can be moved into a greenhouse or protected environment during winter.
