Description
Posoqueria latifolia — Laranja-de-macaco / Monkey Orange
Posoqueria latifolia is an accepted species in the coffee family (Rubiaceae), native from Mexico through tropical South America. It grows as a shrub or small tree in tropical forest environments and has a long history of local use as an edible fruit.
Sweet edible fruit with a very unusual texture
The fruit is commonly known in Brazil as laranja-de-macaco, baga-de-macaco or fruta-de-macaco. Brazilian forestry and native-plant references describe the fruits as edible and sweet.
What makes this accession especially interesting is the edible material surrounding the seeds. Our Brazilian source describes the flavor as sweet and says the seeds can be sucked like candies to enjoy the pulp/aril around them.
Ornamental as well as edible
Posoqueria latifolia is more than a fruit curiosity. The species has ornamental value and produces remarkable white flowers with long, narrow lobes that create an elegant star-like appearance. The glossy evergreen foliage and orange mature fruits add further ornamental interest.
