Description
Eugenia sclerocalyx — guapijuim
This Brazilian Eugenia is known for its prominently enlarged calyx beneath the fruit, which gives the species a memorable appearance. Nursery descriptions of the species report fruits maturing red to purple. Those general descriptions are useful context, but the exact flavor, growing conditions and mature color of the collector’s source tree remain to be confirmed.
- Scientific name: Eugenia sclerocalyx
- Common trade name: guapijuim
- Fruit: reported red to purple, with a conspicuous calyx
- Reserved source lot: 25 seeds requested; final viable count pending
- Source tree details: collection locality and direct taste report still pending
A limited fresh-seed opportunity for Eugenia collectors. Any flavor descriptions published for other trees of this species should not be treated as a promise about this particular accession.
A flavor report worth exploring
A Brazilian grower of E. sclerocalyx describes elongated purple fruit, roughly 2.5–3.5 cm long, and a delicious flavor reminiscent of cherry, strawberry and pitanga. This is a species-level grower report, not a tasting note from the collector’s exact tree. The same grower describes it as an attractive small tree in cultivation; local performance will depend on conditions.
The Brazilian botanical conservation center assessed the species as Vulnerable in 2019 and documents it in the Atlantic Forest of Paraná and Santa Catarina. That is context for the named species, not a claim about the wild status or collection site of this particular seed lot. Sources: Colecionando Frutas grower account; CNCFlora assessment.

November 2026 pre-sale

Sowing
Sow fresh tropical fruit seed promptly in an airy, well-drained medium. Keep evenly moist and warm, avoiding waterlogging and deliberate drying. Species-specific germination timing and climate tolerance have not been confirmed for this accession.
