About Thai Guava

Thai guava refers to a group of large-fruited selections of Psidium guajava widely cultivated in Thailand and Southeast Asia. These guavas are famous for their crisp texture, mild sweetness, and refreshing aroma. Unlike many soft guavas, Thai types remain firm and crunchy, and are often eaten fresh like an apple.

The fruits are typically large, round to slightly oval, with light green skin and white (sometimes pale pink) flesh. They are popular street-market fruits throughout Thailand and are commonly sliced and eaten with salt, sugar, or chili mixes.

Many selections also have fewer seeds and thicker flesh, which makes them excellent for fresh eating and fruit salads.

Description

Fruit description

• Large guava, often much bigger than common tropical guavas
• Skin: light green, sometimes yellowish when ripe
• Flesh: white or pale pink depending on the selection
• Texture: firm, crisp, and juicy
• Flavor: mildly sweet with a pleasant floral aroma

Thai guava is valued because the fruit remains crunchy even when ripe, which allows it to travel well and makes it ideal for fresh consumption.

Plant characteristics

• Evergreen fruit tree or large shrub
• Typical height: about 2.5–4.5 m (8–15 ft) but easily kept smaller by pruning
• Productive and vigorous growth habit

Guava trees are adaptable and can grow in a wide range of soils and tropical to subtropical climates.

Cultivation notes

• Climate: tropical to warm-subtropical
• Light: full sun for best fruiting
• Soil: well-drained soil rich in organic matter
• Water: regular watering during establishment; moderate drought tolerance once mature
• Container culture: excellent candidate for large pots and patio growing

Many guava trees can begin fruiting relatively early, especially with good warmth and sunlight.

Germination

• Seeds germinate best when fresh
• Sow in warm conditions with well-drained substrate
• Germination may take several weeks to a few months depending on temperature and freshness
