Description
Extremely limited availability
Fruit & Plant Characteristics
-
Fruits mature to a deep black color, visually reminiscent of a jaboticaba, 1 to 1.5 cm diam.
-
Exceptional flavor — one of the best Eugenia we have personally evaluated so far
-
Rich, sweet, complex, and intense; among the most remarkable native fruits we have encountered
-
New growth branches flushes in striking magenta tones
-
Leaves resemble pitanga (Eugenia uniflora) in shape, but without pitanga aroma
-
Flavor and aroma profile are entirely distinct from Eugenia uniflora.
Origin
Native to a protected reserve area in Paso de la Patria, northeastern Argentina, near the Paraguay border, within the Paraná River region.
This appears to be a highly localized and possibly endemic species.
Although it shows a superficial resemblance to Eugenia paracatuana, it is clearly a different species. One key distinguishing feature is that the fruit completely loses its sepals when fully mature, unlike E. paracatuana.
Climate & Hardiness
-
Tolerates frost conditions
-
Estimated cold resistance to approximately –5 °C
-
Suitable for warm temperate to subtropical climates
