Sgo Agreement

Special Guardianship Orders (SGO) offer children an alternative legal status that offers more security than long-term care, but without the absolute legal separation from the birth family resulting from an adoption settlement. This is a legislative pathway to sustainability for children for whom adoption is not appropriate. The special guardian has parental responsibility for the child and, while this is shared with the child`s parents, the special guardian has the possibility to exercise this responsibility without the parents` permission. There are exceptions to decisions that a private guardian may make, for example, he or she may not change the child`s surname or remove him or her from the country without the permission of the court or without the consent of all persons with parental responsibility. Biological parents also retain the right to accept or not the adoption.
